The ultimate Lower Zambezi canoe adventure done in comfort. The tour explores the Zambezi valley by canoe, boat and vehicle giving visitors the opportunity to see the Zambezi Valley in a truly unique way. Guided by our local experts clients have the opportunity immerse themselves in the beauty and remoteness of the valley while enjoying the comforts of an accommodated safari.

DAY 1: LUSAKA TO ZAMBEZI
Guests arrive at the Lusaka International airport and after clearing immigration and colleting baggage they are met by the transfer driver and taken to our accommodation for the night.
Gwabi River Lodge is located on the banks of the Kafue river and offer spectacular views of the surrounding area. This afternoon we enjoy a sunset boat cruise and sundowners on the river as our first introduction of the days to come.
We enjoy a catered meal and a relaxed evening at the lodge.

 DAY 2: ZAMBEZI
We enjoy a delicious breakfast at the lodge before our guide conducts a safety briefing for our canoe trip over the next 3 days.
Once ready and packed we embark on our once in a life time canoe safari through the Zambezi Valley. Our journey begins on the Kafue river but soon joins the Lower Zambezi and gives us the opportunity to view the multitude of birds found in the area along with the bigger mammals along the banks of the river.

This afternoon we enjoy our lunch on one of the islands in the river prepared by our staff and a break over the heat of the day. From here we continue the short distance to our secluded Island Bush camp where we spend the night. Once checked into our rooms there will be opportunity for guests to go on a guided birding walk, visit a local village, try your hand at fishing or simply relax and enjoy the surrounding views.

We have dinner and spend the evening around the campfire listening to the sounds of the African Bush.

 DAY 3: ZAMBEZI
We enjoy a relaxed breakfast on our island before we set of for the second day of our canoe safari. The Valley is rich in fauna and flora and our guide will take time to tell us more about the sights and sounds we encounter along the way.

Our lunch will be on one of the sands banks along the way with time to rest and relax. Once we arrive at our accommodation for the evening guests have several options on how to spend the afternoon. Options will include a game drive into the game management area, fishing on the river or a sundowner cruise.
Our dinner is served at the Lodge and we drift away to the sounds of the night.

DAY 4: ZAMBEZI
We enjoy a hearty breakfast before departing on our final canoe adventure into the Lower Zambezi National Park. We travel through the heart of the valley and immerse ourselves in the surrounding beauty. We have our traditional lunch and afternoon break along the banks of the river before departing to our private island camp for the night.
Our last evening is spent on a private island in a fly camp setup for the group offer a truly unique experience and a night under the stars.
There is plenty of time in the afternoon to relax or partake in one of the activities on offer. We enjoy a catered meal on our island and settle in for a relaxed evening.

DAY 5: ZAMBEZI
We rise early this morning and after the traditional coffee or tea with rusks we depart on a guided game drive in an open safari vehicle into the Lower Zambezi National Park. We enjoy a packed breakfast in the park spending maximum time in search of animals.
In the afternoon we slowly make our way back to the river and enjoy lunch before we depart on a boat cruise back to Gwabi.
On arrival we settle into our rooms and enjoy our dinner at the Lodge and drink a farewell toast to our adventure.

 DAY 6: ZAMBEZI to LUSAKA
We enjoy a relaxed breakfast at the Lodge before check out and our transfer back to the airport in Lusaka.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
This tour is fully accommodated and all linen and towels are supplied.  Seasonal malaria precautions may be advisable. Game viewing on foot is difficult, so we also place importance on some of the smaller aspects of the bush. It can get very hot so suitable precautions against sunburn should be taken.

Our price includes all transport, food, coffee, tea, accommodation, canoes and equipment, game drives, entry fees and permits, group equipment and a professional guide. Bottled water will be supplied while on the river.

The price does not include alcohol, soft drinks, curios and tips. Before departure, clients will be required to enter into an agreement pertaining to our booking conditions and general information. Clients are required to have their own comprehensive personal travel insurance.

A valid passport is required by everyone. This tour will visit South Africa and it is the client’s responsibility to insure they have the appropriate visas required for this trip.

Make two photocopies of valuable documents such as your passport, tickets, visas and travellers cheques. Keep one copy with you in a separate place to the original and leave another copy with someone at home.

Clients should always ask for a few extra days in each country when visas are concerned to make provision for possible delays.

FOREIGN CURRENCY
Upon arrival in any respective country we operate in, you will be able to find a Bureau de Change OR ATM Facilities at the airport or in the Town/City the tour is departing from. It is advised to bring any major world currency (US Dollar, Euro or British Pounds) in small denominations and not dated older than 2009. It is advised to get a small amount of local currency upon arrival just to get around until your tour starts.

Credit cards are not favoured in most parts of Southern Africa so please ensure you have enough cash to buy good and possible gratuities.

HEALTH PRECAUTIONS & REQUIREMENTS
The only necessary prophylaxis for Southern Africa is against Malaria (Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique). Adequate chemo-prophylaxis are essential. Prevention is better than cure, so we do advise to also use insect repellent on exposed areas after sunset. Please consult with your general practitioner regarding this.  Please note that you need a Yellow Fever Certificate dated at least 10 days prior to your tour departure and depending on nationality and prior travels.

All Drifters ground handlers will have first aid boxes for use in emergencies, however we recommend that you bring along your own basic supply of medication, headache tablets etc.

***Personal medication
Please bring along any personal medication that you might need on your tour as specific medication could be difficult to find or might not be obtainable in most places we visit. General medication for headaches, colds and fever are easy to get.
Please also inform your guide of any medical conditions. This information will be received professionally and kept confidential.

WEATHER CONDITIONS
Please note that Southern African weather conditions vary tremendously from season to season. During summer months temperatures of up to 40°C can be experienced. During the winter months of June, July and August the nights are very cold, temperatures may drop well below 0°C – although the day temperatures will be pleasant at around 20°C. Please take weather conditions into consideration when choosing a sleeping bag for your tour.

Should you need PRE and POST night accommodation at Gwabi River Lodge it can be arranged with the Drifters reservations department

Please note that we strongly advise against flying out on the day that the tour ends. Drifters will not be held responsible for missed flights on this day. We generally travel long distances and late arrivals are common.

All our tours require participation from all group members.

Please keep in mind that flexibility and an open mind will greatly contribute to an enjoyable safari.

We are travelling in developing countries therefore please do not expect the punctuality you have come to expect in first world countries. Things do not always run according to plan, however we do endeavour to run according to the itinerary as best as possible.
